Project Background

In August 2024, Nordland Lighting completed a comprehensive lighting upgrade for ExecuJet MRO Services South Africa at their world-class hangar facility in Lanseria. Inspired by the aviation principle that an aircraft’s airframe remains viable long after engine replacement, Nordland applied the same philosophy to lighting: an upgradeable system designed for longevity, sustainability, and performance.

This future-proof solution allows for the replacement of light engines as needed, ensuring continued compliance with ESG goals, carbon reduction targets, and long-term cost efficiency.

Key Objectives Achieved

One year into operation, the Nordland lighting system has not only met but exceeded expectations across all performance metrics:

  • Consistent Illumination Maintained lux levels meet prescribed aviation standards at all times, ensuring optimal visibility and safety.
  • Energy Efficiency & Carbon Reduction Integrated daylight and occupancy sensors have significantly reduced energy consumption, contributing to ExecuJet MRO Services carbon emission reduction goals.
  • Minimal Maintenance Failsafe mechanisms ensure that any luminaire failure does not compromise overall illumination. Maintenance is scheduled during non-operational hours, minimizing disruption.
  • Plug-and-Play Flexibility Luminaires can be swapped out within minutes using identical service exchange units, streamlining maintenance and reducing downtime.
  • Optimized Thermal Performance Lower than expected operating temperatures thanks to intelligent sensing and natural ventilation from open hangar doors have extended component lifespan and improved system reliability.
  • Long-Term Sustainability The system is engineered for decades of operation, with upgradeable components that ensure continued performance and cost savings over time.

Financing the Retrofit

Nordland offered a flexible financing model, offering a full-maintenance lease with purchase options. This facilitated:

  • An immediate deployment of the system.
  • Evaluation of the system performance over time.
  • A choice between continued leasing or outright acquisition.

In January 2025, satisfied with the system’s performance, ExecuJet MRO Services exercised their purchase option and simultaneously entered into a service level agreement (SLA) with Nordland for ongoing support.

SLA & Operational Support

Under the SLA, Nordland provides full backup and maintenance services. This proved critical during a severe lightning strike over the New Year period, which impacted a large section of the facility. Nordland responded swiftly, restoring sensor systems and ensuring minimal operational disruption.

The Nordland lighting solution has demonstrated its value as a robust, intelligent, and sustainable system—ideal not only for aviation hangars but also for industrial facilities with high-mounting requirements. Its design, energy efficiency, and long-term reliability make it a benchmark for aircraft hangar lighting.
