Zone 2 Hazardous area: is an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and if it does occur it will exist for a short period only.

Zone 21 locations are those in which
a) under normal operating conditions combustible dust or fibres are (or are likely to be) in suspension in the air in quantities sufficient to produce an explosive mixture, and
b) Metallic dusts could be present.

Zone 22 locations in which deposits of dusts of fibres is such that
a) Their build up on the equipment is great enough to interfere with the safe dissipation of heat from electrical apparatus
b) Dust or fibres in, on, or in the vicinity of electrical apparatus might be ignited by arcs, sparks, or burning material from such electrical apparatus.
